Garmin International, a unit of Garmin, a provider of satellite navigation services, announced that the nuvi 1690 is now available in Canada and utilizes Rogers Communications’ national network to access data from Garmin’s nuLink! service.
As a Rogers Connected device, the nuvi 1690 provides direct links to certain online information like Google local search, traffic, weather, movie listings, flight status, white pages and safety cameras. These same features are available when Canadian customers travel to the U.S., and the nuvi 1690 with Rogers is the first personal navigation device (PND) to allow users to roam across the Canadian and U.S. border.
“The nuvi 1690 is a powerful time-saving tool and the dynamic content helps redefine on-the-go navigation for consumers by keeping them connected and informed,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s VP of worldwide sales. “The Canadian version of the nuvi 1690 comes with one-year of free nuLink! service, and is the first PND in Canada to offer such a broad array of dynamic content that is included in the purchase price of the device.”
The nuvi 1690 with nuLink! has the most point of interests (POIs) search capabilities offered by any PND thanks to the implementation of Google local search and white page telephone listings. Google’s local search brings online POIs to customers’ fingertips and lets them search for destinations by name or key words like they are accustomed to doing on their personal computer. In addition, Garmin has created a “quick search” feature that lets users search via categories like food, lodging and fuel, rather than typing a word or phrase into the search box

A Sunday afternoon joyride by an intoxicated man in a stolen Charleston Police vehicle ended with a crash near police headquarters.
Charleston officers were in the area of Brawley Walkway and Summers Street responding to a disturbance near the Transit Mall on Sunday when James Brandon Burdette, 25, of Charleston, climbed into a 2008 Dodge Durango Police SUV, car No. 219, and took off, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
Burdette backed the vehicle down Brawley Walkway and struck a tree before turning onto Summers Street and heading toward Virginia Street, according to the complaint.
Burdette turned right onto Virginia Street, traveling the wrong way down the main road and continued until he struck a streetlight pole on the north side of the road in the 600 block of Virginia Street. The vehicle finally came to a stop in the 500 block of Virginia Street, near the police station, according to the complaint.
Burdette fled on foot from the scene and ran south on Court Street toward Haddad Riverfront Park, according to the complaint.
Officers caught up with Burdette in the park and took him into custody. They noticed a strong odor of alcohol and noticed Burdette had glassy eyes, according to the complaint.
When asked by police if he had been drinking, Burdette told officers he had drank six beers earlier in the night, according to the complaint.
After performing a standard field sobriety test, officers determined Burdette had a “high probability of impairment.”
He was arrested and charged with felony grand larceny and fleeing while under the influence of alcohol
